CPPSEC2101 – Apply Effective Communication Skills to Maintain Security
This unit provides learners with the skills and knowledge required to use oral, non-verbal and written communication effectively in security work. It focuses on gathering and interpreting information, maintaining positive relationships, requesting behaviour modification in a professional manner, using phone and radio systems to report security risks, and completing accurate security records.
The unit prepares learners to communicate clearly and professionally in a range of security situations, including routine workplace interactions, risk reporting, and contact with people displaying disruptive, abusive, or physically aggressive behaviour.
This unit is a core communication unit within security operations and supports the practical skills needed to work lawfully, safely, and effectively with clients, colleagues, supervisors, emergency services, and members of the public.
UNIT APPLICATION
This unit applies to security officers who are required to gather information from workplace sources, apply standard operating procedures, interpret verbal and non-verbal communication, and interact with others in ways that support safety and conflict resolution.
In practice, the unit covers communication tasks such as reading signs and written instructions in English, clarifying information with relevant persons, requesting behaviour modification without provoking aggression, checking and using communication devices, and recording incident details accurately and securely.
ELEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES
1. Gather, Convey and Receive Information
Locate, read and apply workplace procedures, listen carefully, observe non-verbal communication, develop positive relationships, and clarify understanding through questioning and summarising.
2. Request Behaviour Modification
Identify disruptive or inappropriate behaviour and communicate in a professional way that respects social and cultural differences while reducing the risk of aggression.
3. Report Security Risks
Check phone and radio functions, confirm battery and signal levels, choose the correct channel, and communicate risk information using approved language, codes and protocols.
4. Complete and Store Security Records
Record incident details accurately in notebooks and reports, use information technology correctly, and store information securely according to workplace procedures.

Performance evidence must be assessed through direct observation of the learner, either in person or via audiovisual media. Learners must have access to task specifications, industry-current documents and equipment, personal protective equipment where required, and workplace standard operating procedures and policies relevant to the security work role and legal requirements.
